Sunglasses trends 2026: minimalism challenges maximalism

This spring and summer, the trend compass points us in four directions: maximalism, minimalism, retro aesthetics, and futurism. Bold oversized frames and delicate rimless designs share the spotlight. The timeless retro vibe of the 70s through the 90s is going strong as well.

The result is a refreshingly versatile landscape for sunglasses – individuality takes centre stage and you can mix opposing trends and make them your own. This season, the rules are yours to write.

“Now more than ever, you can stand out with your personal style and still be right at the heart of the trends,” says the assortment planner of Eagle Vision Anu Leinemann.

Colors that calm the mind

This season’s standout colours for sunglasses are translucent and softly pale – or seek the opposite extreme with near-black tones that subtly shift toward blue, green or red. According to Leinemann both light and dark sunglasses colors feel grounding, nature-inspired, and calming this year.

“For example, Pantone’s color of the year 2026, the muted white Cloud Dancer, radiates calm as a counterbalance to today’s hectic and rapidly changing world.”

Maximalism: go big or go home

In 2026, maximalism means oversized silhouettes, bold shapes, and frames that make a statement. Decorations and details have also taken a step in a more eye-catching direction.

“On the catwalks this year, we’ve seen oversized aviators and dramatic cat-eye shapes with sparkling details. The drama of oversized sunglasses is maximized by thick acetate frames and standout textures,” Leinemann describes.

Minimalism: quietly on trend

Minimalist sunglasses, a solid choice in recent years, are staying relevant in 2026 as well. Thin metal frames, low oval shapes, and rimless designs offer a refined alternative to in-your-face maximalism.

“Minimalist sunglasses that have always suited a clean and smart aesthetic get a contemporary update through gradient lenses or rhinestone details – like something straight out of a jewellery box.”

Retro from the 70s and 90s is more popular than ever

Retro is still going strong, and this season the influences stretch from the 1970s to the 1990s. Aviators in a range of sizes feature prominently in both women’s and men’s collections. The most sought-after retro shapes for women are oval and cat-eye, while low-profile ’90s styles are trending in men’s sunglasses.

“This year’s aviators come in both oversized and lower-profile versions. A truly trend-forward pair can often be recognised by their downward-sloping corners. Classic shapes get a fresh attitude from lens colours – gradient and photochromic lenses in particular are having their moment right now.”
